The History of Clan Niall
The history of Clan Niall stretches across the western islands of Scotland and beyond, with distinct traditions rooted in Barra and in Gigha and Colonsay. Over centuries, MacNeils and MacNeills appear in the story of the Hebrides, Kintyre and Knapdale, Ireland, and eventually communities around the world. Their histories include chiefs and castles, shifting alliances and conflicts, migration and settlement, and generations whose stories continue to shape the clan today.
Here in CMAA, those histories come together in fellowship. The Clan MacNeil Association of America welcomes MacNeils, MacNeills, and the many related spellings and families who share an interest in our history and connections. Our purpose is not to collapse distinct traditions into a single story, but to preserve them, learn from them, and celebrate the connections that bring us together today.
